For many pet owners, our pets are cherished family members; which can make going on a “family vacation” without them a difficult decision. Thankfully, the intimate and compassionate pet boarding services we provide at Leon Valley Veterinary Hospital can be just the answer when it comes to what to do with your pet while you’re away.
While our staff will give your pet plenty of love and attention in your absence, there are a few things you can do to help make your pet’s stay a success.
Make Reservations as Soon as Possible
You want to know that your pet is safe and staying with someone you trust. There are certain times of the year that when we are full to capacity with reservations. These times are typically around holidays, but can happen throughout the spring and summer, as well. Make a reservation as soon as you know your travel dates so you can know that your pet’s care is assured.
Bring your Pet in for a Visit
Even if your pet has been here in the past, coming in for a visit before you leave for your trip will help ease your pet’s stress. The more your pet gets to know us with you around, the less anxious he or she will be when you are not around. If possible, consider having your pet stay with us for a night before you leave for an extended vacation.
Food and Medications
A sudden change to your pet’s diet causes an upset stomach, vomiting, and diarrhea, which can make your pet uncomfortable and sad. Bringing your pet’s regular food prevents these problems, keeping your pet happier while you are gone.
If your pet has a chronic condition or disease that requires medication, be sure to pack his or her medication, too. Make sure you bring enough medication for your pet’s stay, and that it is clearly marked with your pet’s name and dosage instructions.
While we do have the basics covered, packing a comfort item or two can go a long way when it comes to keeping your pet happy. Often a blanket and a familiar toy or stuffed animal to snuggle with can help your pet feel at home. We recommend that whatever you choose has your scent on it, and is not too precious. Absolute favorite items should be left at home, so that if something happens to it you and your pet won’t be sad if it is lost or chewed into oblivion by an anxious pet.
Tell Us About Your Pet
Tell us about any problems your pet has that may affect his or her care and handling. If your pet is hard of hearing, terrified of thunder, or does not play well with other animals, we need to know. We can work with you to make small adjustments to our routine in an effort to keep all our guests safe and happy, when possible.
Our goal is to provide you and your pet with a fun getaway. When you know your pet is in good hands and happy, you will not spend your trip worried about him or her.
If you need to make a reservation, or if you have any other questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.
